LENA AIMS AT FIRST WITH THE NEWS

In efforts to employing skilled, dedicated and motivated individuals in line with the agency's mission and vision statements, the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology has issued out tablets to the reporters of the Lesotho News Agency (LENA) on Wednesday.

Speaking at this event, the Minister Mr Ts’oinyane Rapapa said that this event comes in as the ministry’s initiative of ensuring for, balanced, sensitive and responsible news items.

He showed that it is also to ensure that every Mosotho is in access of news in different platforms despite their geographic location.

Mr Rapapa however urged to the reporters to ensure that they report accurate, not biased articles with the utmost transparency especially now that the country is heading for the general elections.

The Acting Director of the Agency Mrs Moroa Mopeli thanked the Minister as well as the Principal Secretary of the ministry saying that it was only last year when she presented her request before and within a short time her request has been attended to.

She mentioned that the tablets come in as the addition especially to the district reporters who usually work at the most compromised areas and the tablets will come in assist them with submission of stories on time.

While adding on some of the challenges that the Agency face, Mrs Mopeli showed that it goes without a saying that most ministries are experiencing a shortage of transport but the Agency is operating with one car and without any in the districts.

On behalf of the Maseru district reporters, Mrs ‘Mamonyooe Polane thanked the agency’s management saying that the tablets come in at the right time that the world is diverting into technology.

She said that COVID-19 pandemic is amongst the issues which have displayed a need for the devices as they had to go out and source news and exposing themselves to the pandemic.

Sharing the same sentiments, the District Reporter Ms ‘Makuena Linake indicated that with this devices they will be able to be first with the news as the theme of the agency states.

The 20 tablets were awarded to the agency’s district and Maseru reporters together with a full year’s data capacity which will run for a year.

The Lesotho News Agency, (LENA), was established in 1985 as a national news agency responsible for the distribution of local, regional, and international news services to the local and international media organisations, institutions and individuals.

It has offices stationed in all the districts across the country.
