The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security received reports that there is an outbreak of unknown cattle disease throughout the country because of rainfalls.
Speaking in an interview, the Ministry’s Chief Information Officer, Mr. Lereko Masupha said they are still making follow-up on this issue to find out the cause and how the country can deal with it. He highlighted that the country is faced with a huge challenge as a result of rainfalls experienced currently as most of the crops did not survive. He indicated that the rains have swept away some minerals which are much needed for the crops.
He stated that they have also failed to harvest wheat due to muddy fields, adding that most of it was destroyed leading to poor harvest. He pointed out that under normal circumstances farmers would be harvesting wheat now as the season for its harvesting is from November to March depending on the regions of the country.
Mr. Masupha indicated that farmers should engage in cropping of vegetables such as spinach and cabbage among others. He stated that they should crop for consumption as well as for commercial. He further pointed out that they can also plant lucerne for animal gracing as well as for selling in order to contribute towards economic growth. He encouraged farmers to keep on trying.
Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Mr. Letsitsi Mokoma revealed that the ministry through a plant health team is prepared for the anticipated swam of locusts which is already available at the neighboring countries.
He indicated that to ensure preparedness, some experts are assessing the situation working together with South African experts in order to tackle each other with ideas to overcome this challenge. He pointed out that two teams of experts are travelling throughout the country in order to assess the situation so as to act accordingly if the locusts are already present in the country.
The Ministry was established with the aim to provide dynamic and pro-active leadership in participatory development and implementation of policies and programs with farmers, provision of expert advisory agricultural services to the farming community and agro-businesses leading to sustainable agriculture for the achievement of food security.
