The prosecution in a case in which ten members of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) are charged with multiple offences including murder, whereby the bodies of the deceased were allegedly dumped into the Mohale Dam has on Thursday presented before the court an opening statement in the matter.
According to the statement, the decaesed together with three others were in May 2017 arrested at the Maseru Border Post by the police, suspected of murder of Private Seliane, a member of the Lesotho Defense Force (LDF)and a street vendor Moeketsi Makhabane, as well as atteempted murder of Private Mponyane, also a member of the LDF.
It indicates that it was later discovered that only one suspect was linked to the crimes, as a result, the deceased and other suspects were released. It states that the accused who are members of the Military Intelligence (MI) were not satisfied with the decision to release the suspects, therefore the then Head MI instructed that they be killed.
The statement further indicates that the deceased were then taken to Setibing against their will whereby they were strangled to death and their bodies dumped into the Mohal Dam.
The prosecution has stated that to prove their case they are going to call evidence from members of the LDF, the police, civillians, medical experts, DNA's, confessions and accomplice witness among others.
Following presentation of the statement, the prosecution called its first witness Senior Inspector Mphelehetse Khatleli of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) who is curently stationed at the Mokhotlong.
It is alleged that the accused in thee matter acted in concert and in furtherance of a common purpose, and strangled Lekhoele Noko, Khothatso Makibinyane and Molise Pakela to death during incidents that happened at Setibing in Maseru on May 16, 2017.
The charges they are facing include conspiracy to murder, unlawful detention and issuing superior orders to unlawful detention as well as to kill.
The case continues before Judge Moroke Mokhesi.
